low carb taco wraps

I love how easy, simple and delicious these Taco Lettuce Wraps are!  These wraps are low-carb and take less than 30 minutes to whip up. Taco seasoned ground turkey meat is packed inside fresh lettuce leaves and topped with a few favorite taco toppings!

Starting the new year with healthy recipes has been on my radar! These Taco Lettuce Wraps are so flavorful and satisfying you won’t even miss the real deal. I love serving this dish with chips, salsa and my Homemade (Chipotle Copycat) Guacamole recipe!

Taco Tuesday just got a whole lot better and healthier with this on the menu!

If you love pico de gallo, try my Homemade Pico de Gallo recipe that’s also super easy! If lettuce wraps are your thing, you’ll also love these P.F. Chang’s Chicken Lettuce Wraps or these Cilantro Lime Shrimp Lettuce Wraps.

I love the convenience of these Taco Lettuce Wraps, especially if you’ve had a long day and don’t feel like spending too much time in the kitchen! You can’t beat a hearty and flavor-packed meal that’s ready in less than 30 minutes! These wraps can also be customized to your likings. You can make these even more protein-packed by adding beans to the filling or topping.

Eating healthy doesn’t get any easier or delicious than this!

I love making my own taco seasoning because I can adjust the seasonings if needed. You can double or triple my recipe so you’ll always have some when you need it in your pantry!

homemade taco seasoning

INGREDIENTS TO MAKE TACO LETTUCE WRAPS

  • Ground turkey meat: you can also use ground beef or chicken.
  • Olive oil
  • Yellow onion
  • Tomato paste: adds flavor to the turkey meat.
  • Taco seasoning: (see my recipe in the recipe box on how to make homemade taco seasoning). You can also use any of your favorite taco seasonings for this recipe.
  • Romaine Lettuce: butter lettuce and iceberg will work as they are all sturdy and pliable. They also all form a natural cup shape that is perfect for wraps!
  • Taco toppings: use your favorite toppings! I’ve included our favorites in the recipe box.

HOW TO MAKE TACO LETTUCE WRAPS

  1. Heat a frying pan to medium heat. Drizzle olive oil and add chopped onions. Sauté for 3 minutes until softened and translucent.
  2. Add in ground turkey, all of the taco seasonings and tomato paste. Stir frequently and break up the meat until the meat is fully cooked and no longer pink, about 10 minutes.
  3. Once cooked and cooled, spoon in taco meat into lettuce leaves. Top with your favorite toppings and enjoy!

TIPS TO MAKING TACO LETTUCE WRAPS

  • You can prep the taco meat the day before or morning to cut the recipe time in half. Make sure to leave out any toppings and store the filling in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to eat.
  • If you want your taco meat to be extra spicy, add your favorite hot sauce to the taco meat when it’s cooking and increase the cayenne to 1/2 teaspoon instead of 1/4 teaspoon.
  • Sometimes I like to double up on the lettuce wraps and use two lettuce leaves for every wrap to ensure the wrap doesn’t rip.
  • Switch up the taco meat with ground chicken or beef! You can use the same taco seasoning for each protein!

ADDITIONAL TACO TOPPINGS TO ADD

I listed a few of our favorite toppings but there are so many more taco toppings you can add! Here are a few more options that would be delicious additions to these Taco Lettuce Wraps.

  • Salsa
  • Cowboy Caviar
  • Hot sauce
  • Diced onions
  • Diced bell peppers
  • Fresh corn
  • Beans
  • Jalapeños
  • Cilantro
  • Sliced tomatoes

LEFTOVERS

You can store leftover taco meat in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer. Make sure to leave out any toppings and do not save the lettuce wraps as they will wilt. When stored in the refrigerator, the taco meat will last up to 4-5 days.

When stored in the freezer, taco meat can last up to 2 months. Make sure to thaw out completely before reheating. To reheat, place the taco meat in the microwave to warm or in a skillet.
