I love that these Cherry Hand Pies are made so easily with only a few simple steps and ingredients. These hand pies have the perfect ratio of pie filling and pie crust and they can even be eaten on the go with one hand!

INGREDIENTS TO MAKE CHERRY HAND PIES

  • Pie crust: you can make your pie crust from scratch (this is my favorite recipe)or use store bought pie crust.
  • Cherry pie filling: store bought will work perfectly and is so delicious.
  • Egg: used as a wash to coat the cherry pies before baking so they have a pretty shine.
  • Powdered sugar: to make the icing.
  • Heavy cream or milk: used to bind the icing.
  • Vanilla extract: adds flavor and gives the icing a slight vanilla flavor.
  • Sprinkles or coarse sugar: to top on your hand pies. You can get creative with this!

HOW TO MAKE CHERRY HAND PIES

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silpat mat.
  2. Roll out prepared pie crust on a well-floured surface and roll out any existing creases. With a 3 inch heart cookie cutter, cut out as many hearts as you can. You will probably get around 8 from each pie crust.
  3. Transfer half of the hearts on a baking sheet. Place about a tablespoon of the cherry pie filling in the center of each heart.
  4. Place the remaining heart halves on top of the cherry filled hearts and gently press the edges down with a fork to make a crimp to seal the pies. Don’t worry if a little pie filling comes out!
  5. Brush the tops of the cherry pies with the beaten egg and bake for 12-14 minutes or until the tops of the pies turn a light golden brown. If you prefer to leave the icing off, you can top the pies with sprinkles or sugar.
  6. To make the icing, whisk all of the ingredients in a bowl until smooth and no lumps remain. Drizzle or frost the pies with a spoon or butter knife. Top with sprinkles or enjoy as is!

These Cherry Hand Pies are fun for kids to make since there are only a few simple and easy steps. You can let them cut out the pie crust with a heart cookie cutter or have them decorate them once they are baked.

RECIPE VARIATIONS

You can switch up the ingredients and make so many different variations based on what you want! You can even leave out the icing and just sprinkle the tops of the pies with coarse Check out some of my favorite below:

Fruit Hand Pies: there are so many different hand pies you can make. Some other easy fruit fillings you could use are apple pie filling, berry filling, peach filling and strawberry filling! The possibilities are endless.

Chocolate Hand Pies: instead of filling these pies with fruit filling, you can add Nutella to the center of these and drizzle the tips with dreamy melted chocolate.

Sugar or Sprinkle Tops: if you prefer a simpler topping for your hand pies or don’t have time to make the icing. You can sprinkle coarse sugar or sprinkles right on top of the egg wash for a simpler and still beautiful look.

You can easily make these Hand Pies for any occasion or Holiday by using different cookie cutters and sprinkles! For example, you can make these pie into stars for the Fourth if July or Eggs for Easter.  Use your imagination and get creative- the possibilities are endless!

The perfect little treats! They were SO easy, and love that they used premade ingredients like the puff pastry and pie filling. Something we can easily make regularly and definitely will be making them again soon!
