Fruity Pebbles Marshmallow Treats

If you’re a Classic Rice Krispie Treats fan like me, you’ll love this fun fruity twist made with Fruity Pebble rice cereal and extra gooey marshmallows. Fruity Pebbles Marshmallow Treats are made with only 4 ingredients and can be made in minutes.

You can enjoy these delicious treats as an easy snack, dessert, pack them in lunch boxes, or whip them up for parties. Kids will especially love the rainbow of colors, the crispy texture and fruity taste. I made these for one of my best friends kid’s birthday party and they were gone in an instant!

We use 6 cups of Fruity Pebbles cereal and a whole 10 ounce bag of mini marshmallows plus a few extra cups so these are loaded with gooey marshmallow flavor and have pockets of melted marshmallow in each bite. I’ve been doing this trick for years and it takes all of my crispy treats to another level.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

No bake treats: You don’t need to turn your ovens, in fact, you can even melt the butter and marshmallow mixture in the microwave if you wanted to. Other no bake treats to try are my Chocolate Dipped Peanut Butter Stuffed Pretzels, No-Bake Cheesecake Balls, and Sugar Cookie Truffles.

Portable: Bring these sweet treats anywhere by easily placing treats in an airtight container or ziplock bag. Pack them up for parties, showers, a lunch box treat, or bring them to work.

Extra marshmallows: In addition to the 1 bag of marshmallows, I add an extra 2 cups so these are extra chewy and packed with marshmallow goodness.

Easy recipe: These Fruity Pebble treats couldn’t be any easier to make! Made with simple ingredients (you only need 4) and the recipe can easily be doubled. Just be sure to make them in an 9×13 inch pan instead of a 9×9 inch pan.

Key Ingredients

  • Fruity Pebbles cereal: The star ingredient! This colorful and fruity cereal can be found at most grocery stores and you can use any brand.
  • Mini marshmallows: You’ll need 6 cups of mini marshmallows to make these extra gooey. They will melt and bind the other ingredients together. Mini marshmallows works best for this recipe as opposed to large marshmallows, this way you’ll get size.
  • Butter: I use salted butter to cut balance the sweetness a bit but you could also use unsalted butter.
  • Vanilla extract: Enhances and adds a warm flavor.

How To Make Fruity Pebbles Marshmallow Treats

Prepare pan: Line a 9×9 inch square pan with foil or parchment paper and grease with butter or nonstick cooking spray.

Melt butter: Bring a large pot, large saucepan, or stock pot to medium heat and add butter and melt.

Make melted marshmallow mixture: Reduce the heat to low heat and add 10 ounce bag of mini marshmallows. Stir until melted, then add vanilla extract.

Add cereal: Remove the pot from heat and stir in the cereal until the marshmallow mixture completely coats the cereal. Stir in the remaining 2 cups of marshmallows until evenly distributed coated.

Press into pan: Add the mixture to the prepared pan and gently press mixture into the pan. Make sure you don’t press too hard otherwise your treats will be too dense and hard. Let rest for 30-60 minutes and slice into squares. Enjoy!

Pro Tips

  • Grease your hands or rubber spatula: Use either non-stick cooking spray or a buttered spatula to press the rice krispie mixture on into your dish. This will prevent your hands or spatula from sticking to the sticky mixture. You can also use a butter wrap to press the mixture.
  • Marshmallow tips: Be sure to use melt the marshmallows on LOW heat to insure they stay soft and will make the treats fluffy. Only use fresh marshmallows- stale marshmallows won’t make these treats as gooey.
  • Treat size: I use a 8×8 or 9×9 inch pan because I love the thicker sized treats, but you can also use a 13×9 inch pan to yield 20-24 treats.
  • Brown the butter: If you’ve ever had Brown Butter Rice Krispie Treats, you already know how amazing they are. Follow the steps in this recipe to brown the butter first before adding the marshmallows. This will add a rich, caramel, nuttiness flavor to your treats.
  • Fruity Pebbles Bars: Instead of cutting these into squares, cut them into rectangles to make bars.

Recipe Variations

  • Alternative cereal: If you want to use another cereal be sure to stick with a fruity flavored option alternative such as: Trix, Fruit Loops, Berry Cheerios, Cap’n Crunch with Berries, Apple Jacks, and Special K with berries
  • Add-Ins: Freeze-dried fruit, M&Ms, crushed Golden Oreos, chopped nuts, pretzels, chocolate chips, or any other of your favorites for added crunch, texture, and flavor.
  • White chocolate dipped treats: Dip half of the treat in melted white chocolate for an extra chocolatey treat. You could also drizzle the treats with melted chocolate instead.
  • Sprinkles: Add rainbow sprinkles to the top of the treats or fold them in with the cereal mixture to add even more color. Kids will love this idea!
  • Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats: If you wanted a a chocolate flavor instead of fruity flavor, swap the Fruity Pebbles cereal for Cocoa Pebbles or Cocoa Puffs.

How To Keep Treats Soft

Keep them away from the refrigerator as they will get hard and the marshmallows will loose their softness and gooeyness. You also want to store leftovers in a sealed airtight container and keep out as much air as possible.

Can You Use Marshmallow Fluff Instead?

You can, however, I don’t recommend it because it will take away from the fluffiness and softness. It will also be extra sweet since extra sugar is added. I’ve never used marshmallow fluff so if you do try it, let me know.

Are Rice Krispie Treats Gluten-Free?

Although rice is gluten-free, some of the manufacturers make their crispy rice cereal with malt which contains gluten.  If you want to make these gluten-free, be to check the cereal box packaging.

Leftovers & Storage

To-store on counter: Place leftovers in an airtight container or cover a plate tightly with plastic wrap. They will store for up to 4-5 days without tasting stale. You can also store in a large ziplock bag.

To-store in fridge: These treats will last a bit longer if you store them in the refrigerator. They will store well for up to 1 week. Be sure to let sit out for at least 30 minutes because they will become hard.

Can You Freeze Rice Krispie Treats?

Yes you can! However, it can cause them to be less soft and gooey so I do not recommend it.

To freeze, place cooled treats in an airtight container and layer with wax or parchment paper to prevent them from sticking. Be sure to let the treats sit out at room temperature for at least 15 minutes or until softened before serving again. Store for up to 1 month.
