Peanut Butter Muddy Buddies

This Peanut Butter Muddy Buddies recipe is made in less than 10 minutes and will satisfy your peanut butter cravings. Muddy Buddies are also known as Puppy Chow, Monkey Munch, or Reindeer Chow and has been one of my favorite sweet treats since I was little!

Each bite of cereal is coated with a sweet peanut butter mixture and then finished with a delightful powdery smooth finish. Packed with layers of crunchiness and this homemade snack mix is even better than the ones you can buy at the grocery store.

This Muddy Buddy Recipe is similar to the classic snack mix which is made of a chocolatey peanut butter melted mixture except we swap the chocolate chips for peanut butter chips. We also add peanut butter chips and Reese’s peanut butter candy to the coated mixture making this over the top- loaded with peanut butter flavor.

There are so many different variations of Muddy Buddies out there but this is one of my favorites. Other sweet snack mixes to try is my Cupcake Muddy Buddies, Bunny Bait Mix, S’mores Snack Mix, Holiday Popcorn Chocolate Snack Mix, and Thin Mint Cookie Muddy Buddies.

Key Ingredients

  • Chex cereal: You can use either corn or rice Chex cereal as they both work great for this recipe.
  • Peanut butter: Make sure to use creamy peanut butter such as Jif or Skippy brand that’s already stirred and has a little sugar already. I use Skippy’s natural creamy peanut butter but any creamy style will work. Be sure not to use a peanut butter that has oil sitting at the top if you use a natural peanut butter, it won’t work because it will be too oily.
  • Peanut butter chips: Adds more peanut butter flavor.
  • Butter: Helps melt the peanut butter mixture and creates a smooth texture. Unsalted butter is preferred since there is salt in the peanut butter already.
  • Vanilla extract: Enhances all the flavors.
  • Powdered sugar: Creates the sweet sugary smooth exterior.
  • Mini Reese’s cups: You can half the miniature cups or quarter them. The super mini peanut butter cups will work great too.

How To Make Peanut Butter Muddy Buddies

Melt peanut butter mixture: In a microwave safe bowl, combine peanut butter, peanut butter chips, vanilla extract, and butter. Melt in the microwave until smooth and stir. I like to heat the microwave in 20-30 second intervals to ensure the peanut butter doesn’t overheat.

Add in cereal: Fold in the cereal until coated.

Coat with powdered sugar: Spoon the peanut butter coated cereal into a large heavy duty ziplock plastic bag and add powdered sugar. Shake until the cereal pieces are evenly coated in powdered sugar.

Add to baking sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Pour the cereal and spread with a spatula. Sprinkle the extra peanut butter chips and Reese’s candy (optional). Enjoy!

Add-Ins

  • Chocolate chips: Milk chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, chocolate chunks, or mini chocolate chips make great additions and a chocolatey flavor.
  • Reese’s pieces; Adds more peanut butter flavor.
  • Sprinkles: Adds fun and color! Add this in to celebrate a birthday or celebration.
  • Nutter Butter cookies: Add in mini bite-sized Nutter Butters or chop up whole cookies.
  • M&M candies
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Peanuts: Lightly roasted peanuts or honey roasted peanuts would be a great add in.

Recipe Variations

  • Works for all holidays: Enjoy this treat all year round! Make it for Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Halloween, Birthdays, and the 4th of July! Swap the peanut butter chips for themed M&M candies and sprinkles.
  • Other nut butters to use instead of peanut butter: Almond butter, sunflower seed butter, granola butter, cashew butter, or any that have a similar consistency as peanut butter. If the nut butter is runny, make sure to stir it from the bottom to thicken it until completely mixed together.
  • Add chocolate: Swap the peanut butter chips for chocolate chips (milk chocolate and dark chocolate make a great addition) or drizzle melted chocolate on top of the coated muddy buddies.
