Key Ingredients

  • Smoked Salmon: The star ingredient! You want to be sure the smoked salmon is cut thin. I use 8 ounces for 25 crackers but you can use more or less salmon if you prefer.
  • Cream cheese: We use 6 ounces of cream cheese for the spread. You can use full-fat, low-fat, whipped cream cheese. Any of your favorite flavored cream cheese such as onion and chive or herb.
  • Pesto: I love using a basic basil pesto but any kind will work.
  • Crackers: Use your favorites! A buttery cracker like a Ritz pairs well with the salmon and cream cheese but any will work. You could also use rye bread slices, crostini, or sliced baguette slices.
  • Capers: Adds a delicious briny and salty flavor.
  • Fresh dill: This is optional but I love the flavor and look of fresh dill.

How To Make Smoked Salmon Bites

Make cream cheese mixture: In a medium bowl, mix together the cream cheese and pesto.

Layer crackers: Spread a thin layer of the cream cheese mixture on each cracker. Top with smoked salmon pieces, a few capers, a sprig of fresh dill, and a slice of cucumber (optional). Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and black pepper, if desired.

Recipe Variations

Smoked Salmon Cucumber Bites: Omit the cracker and spread the cream cheese on a cucumber slice instead for a low carb option.

Toppings: Add fresh lemon slices, lemon juice, lemon zest, pine-nuts, sliced avocado, fresh chives, thinly sliced red onion, sliced green onion, or cherry tomatoes to the tops.

Switch Up The Crackers: Instead of using a buttery cracker such a Ritz, use your favorite such as Triscuit crackers, flatbread crackers, and Carr’s.

Cream cheese spread variation: Instead of cream cheese you can use Greek yogurt, sour cream, or vegan cream cheese.

Puff pastry bites: Make puff pastry cups instead of using a cracker by cutting puff pastry sheets to fit a muffin pan and bake according to package.

Smoked salmon crostini: Instead of using crackers, make homemade little crostinis to use as the base instead. This is one of my favorite ways to enjoy these bites!

How To Store Leftovers

It’s best to eat these Smoked Salmon Appetizer Bites the day of or a few hours after you assemble them. I also recommend serving smoked salmon when it’s cold or at room temperature since it’s seafood.

You can place any leftovers in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator until the next day. The crackers may start to become soft and soggy so it’s best to easy these little bites fresh.
