HONEY GARLIC SHRIMP RECIPE

Easy dinner recipes are my favorite, and there’s nothing better than when you have dinner ready in less than 30 minutes! If you’re looking for the ultimate combination of sweet, sticky, and spicy, then you’ll love this spicy shrimp. Made with just a handful of simple ingredients, this honey garlic shrimp  recipe is a great option for whenever you’re looking for quick, easy, and delicious!

Soak the shrimp in the Sriracha-based marinade for either 15 minutes or overnight–this recipe is truly versatile! Prep this recipe ahead of time to have dinner ready in no time or make it whenever you’re making last-minute decisions! This recipe does not lack flavor whatsoever because fresh ginger and soy sauce perfectly balance each other out.

In need of some ideas to pair with this recipe? I like to serve this recipe with Healthy Macaroni Salad,  Easy Corn Fritters, or Roasted Garlic Parmesan Brussels Sprouts! Shrimp is full of protein and great to pair with the most simple side dishes and veggies.

INGREDIENTS

Honey: Honey adds a natural sweetness to this honey garlic shrimp that balances the heat. Use maple syrup or your choice of sweetener for the best flavors!

Soy Sauce: Low-sodium soy sauce is used to give the marinade the savory it needs. Feel free to use tamari or coco aminos for gluten-free versions!

Garlic: Freshly minced garlic is best because it provides the most savory and fresh flavors! You can either finely dice the garlic or place it in a garlic press.

Sriracha: Sriracha is the key ingredient in this recipe which brings all the heat. Feel free to adjust the spice levels to your preferences! Omit for kid-friendly recipes!

Ginger: Fresh garlic adds an additional sweetness that allows the sauce to be rich and pungent.

Shrimp: Be sure to use uncooked shrimp that is peeled and deveined for this recipe. You can use either frozen or fresh shrimp. If using frozen shrimp, just make sure to thaw it first!

Olive Oil: I like to use olive oil because it has a high smoke point and is pretty neutral. Feel free to experiment with different cooking oils.

Garnishes: Garnish this spicy shrimp with green onions or sesame seeds for extra textures and flavors.

HOW TO MAKE SPICY HONEY GARLIC SHRIMP

steps of honey garlic shrimp recipe from marinating the shrimp in the bowl to frying it in the pan

STEP ONE: First, in a medium bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce, garlic, Sriracha, and fresh ginger.

STEP TWO: Next, add the shrimp and gently mix until it is fully coated. Cover the shrimp with plastic wrap and allow it to sit in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes. You can also allow the shrimp to sit in the marinade in the refrigerator for eight to ten hours or overnight.

The longer the shrimp marinates, the more tender and flavorful it will be!

STEP THREE: Heat the oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. Place the shrimp in the skillet with the rest of the marinade sauce. Cook until the shrimp is pink on one side–about one to two minutes. Be careful not to overcook the shrimp!

STEP FOUR: Remove the shrimp from the pan and let the sauce simmer for a few minutes until bubbly and thickened. Place the shrimp back in the pan and toss to coat the sauce.

STEP FIVE: Garnish the cooked shrimp with sliced green onions if you would like. Enjoy! Serve this recipe as an appetizer before a main meal or serve with noodles, veggies, or your favorite rice.

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH ALREADY COOKED SHRIMP?

You can use pre-cooked shrimp for salads, stir-frys, rice, soups, spring rolls, sushi, etc. You can also use pre-cooked shrimp for this recipe. All you need to do is just briefly cook the pre-cooked shrimp with the sauce.

SHOULD SHRIMP BE RINSED?

It is ideal to rinse your shrimp prior to cooking to make sure any excess shell is removed. It’s always best to stay safe!

TIPS

  • Be sure to devein the shrimp before ingesting.
  • To make the soy sauce thicken a little more as it cooks, add cornstarch to it.
  • To save time, use pre-minced garlic from the jar!
  • If you are using pre-cooked shrimp, you will not need to cook it long at all. You are essentially just reheating the shrimp the sauce.
  • If you don’t want this shrimp to be spicy, simply omit the sriracha sauce.

Ingredients

  • ⅓ cup honey, melted
  • ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 3 cloves garlic; minced
  • 1 Tablespoon sriracha optional, add more or less depending on how spicy you want your shrimp
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger; optional minced
  • 2 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound shrimp; uncooked (peeled and deveined)

Instructions

  • Whisk together the honey, soy sauce, garlic, sriracha and fresh ginger in a medium bowl.
  • Add the shrimp and delicately mix until coated. Cover the shrimp with plastic wrap and let sit in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes. You can let this sit for up to 8-12 hours, or overnight. The longer the shrimp marinates, the more flavor they will have.
  • Heat olive oil in a skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. Place the shrimp in the skillet with the rest of the marinade sauce. Cook until the shrimp is pink on one side, about 1-2 minutes. Flip the shrimp and cook the other side for about 1 minute longer until opaque and completely cooked through.
  • Remove the shrimp from the pan and let the sauce simmer for a few minutes. It will reduce and thicken. Place the shrimp back in the pan and toss to coat the sauce.
  • Garnish with sliced green onions (optional) and enjoy! You can serve this shrimp as an appetizer or it can be made into a meal by serving it with rice and steamed veggies.
