Eating cookie dough is one of my favorite things to do when baking a batch of Chocolate Chip Cookies. Does anyone else feel the same way?! I always feel just a tiny bit guilty though because we all know we’re not “supposed” to consume raw cookie dough.

These Cookie Dough Truffles tastes exactly like cookie dough and it’s even better because they’re rolled into a truffle, then coated in chocolate. Everyone will devour these without the risk of getting sick so you can eat these without any guilt-YIPPY!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles are made with the same ingredients as a traditional Chocolate Chip Cookie except we heat the flour (to make it safe to eat) and omit the eggs.

These delicious truffles are perfect for any occasion or holiday. They are super easy to store in both the refrigerator and freezer so you can always have them available.

KEY INGREDIENTS

Flour: you’ll want to treat the flour to avoid getting salmonella poisoning from consuming raw flour. See how-to in notes.

Butter: you’ll want to use unsalted so we can control the amount of salt going into these truffles. The butter should be softened at room temperature so it can cream together with the other ingredients nicely.

Sugar: you’ll need both granulated sugar and brown sugar.

Vanilla extract: pure vanilla has the most flavor and brings out the signature “cookie dough” flavor.

Mini chocolate chips: I recommended using semi-sweet because the truffles are already sweet. The mini-sized chocolate chips work well for these bite-sized treats.

Melting chocolate: you can find this in the baking aisle, it can also be known as almond bark.  Use white chocolate, dark chocolate, milk chocolate or a combination.

Milk: whole milk works best but you can use any milk for these truffles.

HOW TO MAKE COOKIE DOUGH TRUFFLES

BEAT SUGARS AND BUTTER. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, cream together the butter and sugars until light and fluffy.

ADD REMAINING INGREDIENTS. Add vanilla extract, milk, salt, and flour. Continue to mix together until combined and be sure to scrape the sides of the bowl. Fold in the chocolate chips and mix until thoroughly mixed together.

SHAPE INTO TRUFFLES. Using a mini ice cream scoop (equivalent to 2-3 tablespoons), scoop dough and form truffles into nicely shaped balls. Place onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze for 20 minutes to harden.

DIP TRUFFLES IN CHOCOLATE. Melt chocolate in 30-second increments until melted and smooth. Place truffles into melted chocolate and coat all sides with a spoon. Allow the excess to drip off the side of the bowl. Place coated truffles back on baking sheet and top with more chocolate chips, sprinkles, or drizzle with white chocolate (optional).

LET TRUFFLES HARDEN. Place and store the truffles in the refrigerator to harden for at least an hour. Enjoy!

RECIPE TIPS & VARIATIONS

Skip dipping the cookie dough balls in chocolate so you have edible cookie dough!

Other topping ideas to add are sprinkles (use them for different holidays or occasions), colored sugar, crushed Oreos, chopped nuts, toffee bits, crushed pretzels, or mini M&Ms. The possibilities are endless, use your favorites!

Add sea salt to the tops of the truffles to make a nice contrast to the sweetness of the chocolate.

Instead of using milk chocolate, swap for white chocolate. You can also add food gel coloring to white chocolate if you want to make these balls different colors.

Make the into smaller sized balls (like a pea-shape) so you can add them to vanilla ice cream. You’ll have homemade cookie dough ice cream instantly!

IS IT SAFE TO EAT RAW COOKIE DOUGH?

It is safe to eat raw cookie dough if you omit the eggs and heat your flour. Then, you’re good to go! It only take a few minutes to heat treat flour so be sure you do it.

HOW TO HEAT TREAT FLOUR

You always want to be sure you heat the flour before consuming it raw in recipes like these Cookie Dough Truffles. Theres a small chance that raw flour can contain salmonella and bacteria so safety first.

Heating the flour will kill any bacteria present if theres any. To make raw flour safe to eat, place on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees F for about 5-10 minutes. Just be sure it doesn’t burn.

You can also microwave the flour which would be the quickest and easiest way. Place the flour in a bowl and heat on high for 20-45 seconds. Each microwave is different, so please be mindful of the temperature.

HOW TO MAKE EDIBLE COOKIE DOUGH

It’s easy! You can make this cookie dough and enjoy it just as it is- no need to form into balls and dip into chocolate. To make edible cookie dough, just omit eggs and make sure you heat treat the flour (see above or recipe notes). You can do this to any cookie recipe!

LEFTOVERS, FREEZING & STORAGE

To-store: store these Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles in an airtight container or large ziplock bag in the refrigerator for a week. You can leave them out at room temperature before eating or enjoy them cold.

To-freeze: these truffles are perfect for making-ahead and freezing! I like to have a stash of these laying around my freezer because I’ll instantly have dessert handy whenever I have a sweet tooth.

Store in a ziplock bag or airtight container for up to 6 months. Defrost at room temperature for at least 15 minutes. They will defrost quickly so they don’t need much time.
