Why You’ll Love This Recipe
key ingredients
- Chocolate: I used white chocolate chips and semi-sweet chocolate chips for a perfect combination of sweet flavors but you can use any of your favorite flavored chocolate, I love the bitterness from the semi-sweet chocolate because it balances out the sweetness.
- Coconut oil: Helps melt the chocolate and make it smooth.
- Candy: I used Conversation Hearts and Valentine’s Day themed M&M’s to make this bark extra festive.
- Pretzels: I love using the Valentine’s Day XOXO edition but feel free to use regular pretzel sticks or mini twists.
- Sprinkles: This is optional and for fun. Add your favorite Valentine’s Day themed sprinkles.
how to make valentine’s day bark
Melt chocolate: Place white chocolate chips and 1 teaspoon of coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in 30-second intervals. Stir in-between each interval until the chocolate is smooth and melted. Repeat with semi-sweet chocolate. Alternatively, you could use a double boiler to melt the chocolate.
Form bark: In the meantime, line a baking sheet with parchment paper, wax paper, or a silicone mat. Pour white melted chocolate onto the prepared baking sheet and spread out with spatula to form a rectangular even layer shape, about 12×9 inches.
Swirl chocolate together: Place the melted semi-sweet chocolate in a ziplock bag and cut off a small piece of the corner. Drizzle the chocolate on top in a zig-zag fashion and use a toothpick or butter knife to swirl the chocolate layers together.
Add toppings and refrigerate: Top with candy hearts, M&Ms, and sprinkles. Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator and let set for at least an hour. Cut the bark into random pieces with a shark knife or your hands. Store in the refrigerator. Enjoy!
tips & variations
- Switch up the chocolate: I use semi-sweet chocolate and white chocolate but you can use any type of candy melts, almond bark, milk chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, or dark chocolate.
- Add peanut butter flavor: Add a few tablespoons of creamy peanut butter to the chocolate mixture and melt. Top with your favorite peanut butter candies. Peanut butter lovers will love this!
- Add a little bit of salt: Sprinkle flaky sea salt on top of the chocolate before letting it set in the refrigerator. This will balance out the sweetness and enhance the flavors.
- Chocolate Bars: Make these into chocolate bars instead of bark by cutting the bark into neatly cut bars. Using a sharp knife will help.
- Pink or red chocolate: Use red or pink candy melts to add food coloring gel to the white chocolate if you wanted to add more color to the chocolate base.
