M&M Rice Krispie Treats
If you love colorful and easy no bake treats, these M&M Rice Krispie Treats are easy to make and adults and kids of all ages will love them. Similar to my Classic Rice Krispie Treats recipe, except these are loaded with colorful chocolate candies inside, then we add a layer of chocolate on top of the rice krispie treats, then top with more M&M candies.
The chocolate shell from the M&Ms gives these treats a delicious chocolatey crunch in every bite and goes perfectly with the marshmallow flavor. They are incredibly chewy, soft, and is the ultimate no bake recipe.
Rice krispie treats are on of my favorite recipes to make all year round, especially during the summer because they take minimal time in the kitchen and only need a handful of ingredients to make these.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
key ingredients
- Rice Krispies cereal or crispy rice cereal: The main ingredient and base of this recipe. Any rice krispie brand will work.
- Mini marshmallows: You’ll need 8 cups of mini marshmallows . The marshmallows will melt and bind the other ingredients together. Mini marshmallows works best for this recipe as opposed to the large size. Add extra marshmallows if you want your crispy treats extra gooey.
- Butter: I use salted butter to cut balance the sweetness a bit but unsalted butter or coconut oil could be used instead.
- Vanilla extract: Adds a warm flavor and enhances the flavors.
- Chocolate chips: We melt chocolate chips and spread it all over the top of the treats for more chocolate.
- Mini M&M candies: The star of the show! These candy-coated chocolates adds a fun, colorful, and chocolatey twist. Use your favorite kind of M&M flavors and colors. I love using the mini M&Ms to get more chocolate in every bite but feel free to use the regular sized candies instead.
how to make M&M rice krispie treats
Prepare square baking pan: Line a 9×9 inch pan with foil or parchment paper and grease with butter or non-stick cooking spray.
Melt butter: Bring a large pot, large saucepan, or stock pot to low heat. Add butter and melt.
Make marshmallow mixture: Reduce the heat to low heat and add mini marshmallows. Stir until melted, then add vanilla extract.
Add cereal: Remove the pot from heat and stir in the cereal until the marshmallow mixture completely coats the cereal. Stir in 1/2 cup of M&M candies and stir just until combined. Be sure not to stir too much otherwise the candies will melt.
Add the mixture to the prepared pan: Gently press the mixture into the pan. Make sure you don’t press too hard otherwise your treats will be too dense and hard.
Melt chocolate: In a small microwave-safe bowl, heat chocolate chips and coconut oil. Heat in 30 second intervals until melted and smooth.
Top treats with chocolate and M&Ms: Pour the melted chocolate on top of the rice krispies and spread evenly with a spatula. Top with remaining M&M candies and let the treats rest for 30-60 minutes or until chocolate hardens. Cut into squares and enjoy!
tips & Variations
- Alternative cereal: Chex cereal, Chocolate Rice Krispies, or Cheerios would also work since they don’t have any added flavors or colors.
- Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats: Add a few tablespoons of peanut butter (or your favorite nut butter) to give these a nuttier flavor. Other butters to use are almond butter, cashew butter, or sunflower butter. Be sure to add the nut butter to the melted marshmallow mixture. You can also add peanut butter M&M candies or Reese’s Pieces.
- Spray your hands or rubber spatula: Use either cooking spray or rub them with butter before you press the rice krispie mixture on into your dish. This will prevent your hands from sticking to the sticky mixture. You can also use a butter wrap to press the mixture.
- Treat size: I use a 8×8 or 9×9 inch baking dish because I love the thicker sized treats, but you can also use a 13×9 inch pan to yield 20-24 treats.
- Brown the butter: If you’ve ever had Brown Butter Rice Krispie Treats, you already know how amazing they are. Follow the steps in this recipe to brown the butter first before adding the marshmallows. This will add a rich, caramel, nuttiness flavor to your treats.
f&Q
CAN YOU USE MARSHMALLOW FLUFF INSTEAD?
You can, however, I don’t recommend it because it will take away from the fluffiness and softness. It will also be extra sweet since extra sugar is added. I’ve never used marshmallow fluff so if you do try it, let me know. Fresh marshmallows are always best.
CAN YOU FREEZE RICE KRISPIE TREATS?
Yes you can! However, it can cause them to be less soft and gooey so I do not recommend it.
To freeze, place cooled treats in an airtight container and layer with a piece of parchment paper or wax paper to prevent them from sticking. Be sure to let the treats sit out at room temperature for at least 15 minutes or until softened before serving again. Store for up to 1 month.
ARE M&M RICE KRISPIES TREATS GLUTEN-FREE?
Although rice is gluten-free, some of the manufacturers make their crispy rice cereal with malt which contains gluten. If you want to make these gluten-free, be to check the cereal box packaging.
HOW TO KEEP TREATS SOFT
Keep them away from the refrigerator as they will get hard and the marshmallows will loose their softness and gooeyness. You also want to store leftovers in a sealed airtight container and keep out as much air as possible.
leftovers & storage
To-store on counter: Place leftover rice krispie treats in an airtight container or cover a plate tightly with plastic wrap in a cool dry place. If you need to layer the bars, I recommend placing a piece of parchment paper or wax paper in between each layer. They will store for up to 3-4 days without tasting stale. You can also store in a large ziplock bag.
To-store in the refrigerator: These treats will last a bit longer if you store them in the refrigerator. They will store well for up to 1 week. Be sure to let sit out for at least 30 minutes because they will become hard.
