key ingredients

  • Cool whip: I prefer to use lite or non-fat cool whip to keep this dip on the lighter side. Be sure the cool whip is defrosted.
  • White cake mix: The key ingredient that gives this sweet dip the cake batter flavor.
  • Milk: Whole milk, low-fat milk, almond milk, or heavy cream will all work to help thin out the dip. Greek yogurt or vanilla yogurt could be used as an alternative.
  • Cream cheese: Make sure the cream cheese is at room temperature. I like to use whipped cream cheese because it blends in better with the ingredients and makes for an extra fluffy dip.
  • Patriotic sprinkles: The sprinkles add a fun twist and is the funnest part! You can find these at most grocery stores towards the beginning of summer.
  • Dippers: I love using a variety of dippers such as pretzels, pretzel sticks, Oreos, vanilla wafers, animal crackers, and fresh fruit. Use any of your favorites!

how to make cake batter dip

Heat treat cake mix: First, you should always heat treat the cake mix to make mix safe to eat. Place cake mix on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees F for about 5-10 minutes. You can also microwave by adding the mix to a bowl and heat on high for 20-45 seconds. Each microwave is different, so please be mindful of the temperature.

Beat together cream cheese, cake mix and milk: In a large mixing bowl using an electric hand mixer whip together the cream cheese, cake mix and milk.

Add Cool Whip: Once blended, mix in the Cool Whip. The batter will become smooth.

Add sprinkles: Gently fold in sprinkles.

Serve and enjoy: Place in a serving bowl and garnish with extra sprinkles. Enjoy immediately or place in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Serve with your favorite dippers and enjoy!

TIPS & VARIATIONS

  • Cake mix: Use your favorite box of cake mix, I like sticking with either white, vanilla or funfetti cake mixes for the Fourth of July.
  • Chocolate Dip: Use chocolate cake mix to make this dip into a chocolate flavored dip.
  • Add-ins and toppings: Mix in your favorites or add them to the top of the dip like mini marshmallows, M&M’s, crushed Oreos, milk chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, mini chocolate chips, Reese’s pieces, peanut butter chips, chopped nuts (for a little crunch), cookie dough, and brownies bits.
  • Chill the dip: For best results, let the dip sit in the fridge to chill for at least 20 minutes or overnight to let the flavors come together.
  • Make sure you heat treat the dry cake mix just to be on the safe side.

HOW TO HEAT TREAT CAKE MIX

Heating the cake mix will kill any harmful bacteria or present in the raw flour if theres any. To make cake mix safe to eat, place on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees F for about 5-10 minutes.

Just be sure it doesn’t burn. You can also microwave the cake mix which would be the quickest and easiest way. Place the cake mix in a bowl and heat on high for 20-45 seconds. Each microwave is different, so please be mindful of the temperature.

LEFTOVERS & STORAGE

Store any leftover cake batter dip in an airtight container or cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days. You may need to stir the dip when you want to eat it and add a little bit of milk again to combine all of the ingredients.

Can You Freeze Leftover Dip?

You can! Place the dip in an airtight container and store in the freezer for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or on the counter for a few hours. Be sure to give the dip a good stir before serving. Try to omit any sprinkles if you freeze as they will stain the dip.
