Chocolate Chip Brownies

These Chocolate Brownies require minimal time in the kitchen and in the oven- they are simply the best. They have a soft, fudgy, chewy texture with moist crumbs and a crackly top that’s so much better than the box mix.

Made with only 7 basic pantry ingredients and each bite has a rich chocolate flavor that will make these the perfect brownie. I bake these brownies all throughout the year and they are great for all and any occasions.

I used to be a boxed brownie girl before this recipe and now I can’t go back because this homemade brownie recipe is too easy. The additional chocolate chips makes these next level brownies and extra gooey..who wouldn’t love that?

key ingredients

  • Butter: Make sure to melt and cool the butter. I used salted butter so you don’t have to add salt but you can also use unsalted butter, just add 1/4 teaspoon of salt in the recipe.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder: The key ingredient to making these a chocolate flavor.
  • Granulated sugar: Adds sweetness.
  • Egg: Helps binds the ingredients together and adds richness.
  • All-purpose flour: Spoon and level the flour when measuring it. Be sure not to scoop it out of the bag using the measuring cup. This way, you won’t accidentally measure out too much.
  • Vanilla extract: Enhances the flavors of the chocolate.
  • Chocolate chips: I use semi-sweet chocolate chips but you can also use milk, white, dark chocolate, or chocolate chunks. We add extra chocolate chips in the brownie batter and on top to make extra chocolatey brownies.

how to make chocolate chip brownies

Prepare baking dish: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8 inch square baking dish or line with parchment paper and set aside.

Stir wet ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl combine melted butter, cocoa powder and sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved with a wooden spoon. Add eggs one at a time, then add the vanilla and stir until combined.

Stir together dry ingredients: Stir in the flour until all of the ingredients are incorporated. Be sure NOT to over-mix, the batter will be slightly lumpy. Fold in the chocolate chips.

Bake: Spread the brownie batter onto prepared pan and bake for approximately 20-22 minutes or until the center is slightly set.  Add more chocolate chips on top of the brownie batter (optional). Once the center is set let the brownies cool for 10 minutes before cutting. Cut cooled brownies into 9 large squares or 16 small squares.

recipe tips

Before baking these brownies please remember metal pans bake much more quickly than glass baking pans. Each oven bakes a little differently, so start checking the brownies 5 minutes before the suggested bake time so you don’t over bake the brownies.

  • Extra rich and chocolatey brownies: Add more chocolate chips or chocolate chunk pieces than what the recipe calls for.
  • Don’t over mix your brownie batter: This could change the texture of these chewy and fudge-like brownies. It’s OK if the brownie batter has lumps.
  • Place parchment paper on the bottom of your baking dish for extra easy cleanup and the brownies will lift right up.
  • Use a sharp or plastic knife to cut the brownies for a clean cut.
  • Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the top of the brownies to make the best Brownie Sundaes.
  • Peanut Butter Brownies: Add 1/4 cup of peanut butter to the batter or add in peanut butter chocolate chips. You could also swirl in the peanut butter.

  • Mint chocolate pieces: For a hint of mint and extra chocolate.
  • M&Ms: Chocolatey fun and colorful. Perfect for a kids birthday party or celebration!
  • Reese’s Pieces: Peanut butter and chocolate is a delectable combination.

  1. I think point number 4 in instructions contradicts point number 3 in notes. Doesn’t it?
So is it Ok to over mix or not?
    Thank you,
    Ana.

    1. Hi there! Thank you for your comment, that was a typo. I just fixed it! Be sure to NOT overmix. Just combine the ingredients so they are all incorporated. The batter will be slightly lumpy and that is ok. Thank you and happy baking!

My 13 year old daughter just made these, they are absolutely wonderful! This recipe deserves more reviews, I almost overlooked it because of the lack of ratings, but I’m so glad we tried it anyway! Daughter gives it 8/10 on a scale of difficult to easy, and this is now our go-to brownie recipe. Thank you!
