5 layer bean dip
5 Layer Mexican Dip is always a good idea to make especially for your next party, game days, Super Bowl Party, beach and pool days, any get togethers, or BBQs. It takes minutes to assemble and can be made up to 2-3 days in advance.
Loaded with 5 layers of refried beans, creamy taco seasoned sour cream, homemade or store-bought guacamole, your favorite salsa, shredded cheese and toppings of your choice. Both adults and kids will love this appetizer and you can customize the layers exactly how you want.
This 5 Layer Bean Dip will be a huge hit because it’s bursting with taco flavor and layered with favorite dips in 1 dish.
Other easy Mexican recipes to serve with this dip is my favorite Tortilla Chips, Shrimp Ceviche, Beef Enchilada Skillet, and Ground Turkey Enchiladas.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
ingredients
- Sour cream: Adds the perfect amount of tanginess to this dip. You can use low-fat or fat-free sour cream as an alternative.
- Guacamole: My favorite ingredient! If I have fresh ripe avocados at home I’ll make homemade guacamole. If not I use store-bought. Either way works perfectly.
- Refried black beans or pinto beans: The first layer of our dip. Use any of your favorite type of refried beans. You can warm the bean layer before assembling the dip or use them right from the can.
- Taco seasoning: Use a store-bought seasoning or make your own from scratch. I use Trader Joe’s taco seasoning or a McCormick packet.
- Salsa: We use a chunky salsa or this fresh tomato salsa to layer the dip and add a tablespoon in the sour cream mixture.
- Shredded cheese: The combination of shredded sharp cheddar cheese and Monterey jack cheese is my favorite in this dip because they add a sharp and mild flavor. You could also use Jack or a Mexican blend. I also love shredding my own cheese for an extra creamy texure.
- Toppings: Use your favorite, the possibilities are endless. Some favorites are chopped tomatoes, chopped onion, sliced black olives, hot sauce, green onions, green chiles, fresh cilantro or chives.
- Dippers: Tortilla chips are always a layer dip favorite. Other dippers are crackers, pita chips, and fresh veggies such as carrots sticks, sliced red or green bell peppers, cucumber slices, and celery sticks.
how to make 5 layer bean dip
Layer beans: In a 9 inch pie dish or square baking dish or casserole dish, layer refried bean mixture onto the bottom of the dish in an even layer. We add the beans first because they are the most difficult to spread out unless they are warmed.
Make sour cream mixture: In a small bowl, combine sour cream, taco seasoning and 1 tablespoon of salsa. Mix until combined.
Add remaining layers: Add the sour cream layer on top of the refried beans followed by the guacamole. Make sure both are spread out evenly. Spoon on the salsa and spread out evenly.
Sprinkle cheese and toppings of choice: Top with shredded cheese and add your favorite toppings on top of cheese (optional). Enjoy with tortilla chips or your favorite dippers!
recipe tips & variations
- Low carb dish: Make this into a low carb snack by dipping your favorite fresh vegetables in this dip.
- Healthier alternative: You can make this a healthier version by using low-fat sour cream or plain Greek yogurt instead of regular sour cream, low-fat shredded cheese and fat-free refried beans.
- Double the recipe: Layer this dip in a 13×9 inch baking dish or large party dish.
- Extra layers: Add as many extra layers as you wish. Some other additional layer ideas are olives, shredded lettuce, ground beef, pico de gallo, an extra layer of cheese, corn, and diced tomatoes.
- Serving options: You can serve this in a 9 inch pie dish, square baking dish, or individual clear plastic cups (fun for parties).
- 5 Layer Bean Dip with Cream Cheese: Swap the sour cream for softened cream cheese to make this extra creamy.
make ahead
I love making dips a few hours ahead or the day before because it lets the flavors come together. The longer the dip sits in the refrigerator, the more flavor it will have.
leftovers & storage
Store any leftovers in an airtight container or cover bowl with plastic wrap for up to 3-4 days.
I do not recommend freezing this dip as it will change the texture completely.
