Pumpkin Spice Puppy Chow

If you love all things pumpkin spice and pumpkin season, you will fall in love with this Pumpkin Spice Puppy Chow! The original Puppy Chow (also commonly known as Muddy Buddies) is made with Chex cereal, creamy peanut butter, semi-sweet chocolate chips and powdered sugar, but we give the classic a festive twist by loading it with pumpkin spice flavors.

This snack mix is made with simple ingredients and packed with favorite Fall flavor so it’s always a real crowd pleaser. Puppy Chow reminds me of my childhood and the joy it created in the kitchen because it was such an easy recipe especially as a kid.

The cereal mixture is  coated in a sweet and spiced layers of pumpkin spice that your taste buds will go crazy for. Each bite has a crunchy texture with just the right amount of warm pumpkin spice flavor.

key ingredients

  • Chex cereal: You can use either corn or rice Chex cereal as they both work great for this recipe. If you want your puppy chow to be extra sweet use Cinnamon Chex cereal.
  • Butter or coconut oil: Helps melt the white chocolate chips and creates a smooth texture.
  • Powdered sugar: Creates the velvety and sweet smooth exterior.
  • White chocolate chips: Gives this puppy chow a perfectly sweet flavor. White almond bark or white candy melts will work too.
  • Spices: Cinnamon, pumpkin spice, nutmeg, and cloves gives the muddy buddies the ultimate pumpkin spice flavor. We add more than just pumpkin spice to enhance all the Fall flavors.
  • Pumpkin or Fall candy: I love using Mellowcreme Pumpkins because I think they’re so cute but you can also use candy corn, Reese’s Pieces, Halloween themed or Pumpkin Spice M&M candies,  Pumpkin Spice Kisses, or Pumpkin gummies.

Melt white chocolate chips: In a microwave safe bowl, melt white chocolate chips and coconut oil until smooth and stir. I like to heat the microwave in 20-30 second intervals to ensure the chocolate doesn’t overheat.

Add in spice: Add cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice, cloves, and nutmeg. Stir until combined.

Coat cereal: Add Chex cereal to a large bowl and add the spiced melted chocolate and gently mix together to coat with a rubber spatula or wooden spoon.

Shake cereal to coat: Add powdered sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice to a large ziplock and seal bag. Shake to combine. With a large spoon, spoon the coated cereal into the bag and seal. Shake until the cereal pieces are evenly coated in powdered sugar mixture.

Add to baking sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Pour the cereal and spread with a spatula. Sprinkle the Pumpkin Mellowcremes or other pumpkin candies on top (optional). Enjoy!

tips & variations

  • Add orange food gel: Add it to the melted chocolate to make your puppy chow orange. You could also use orange candy melts instead of the white chocolate.
  • Chex cereal: Use a sweeter Chex mix flavor to make an extra sweet treat. Honey Nut Chex or Cinnamon Chex cereal make great options.
  • Chocolate flavor: Instead of using white chocolate, swap it for a milk or dark chocolate coating and add chocolate chips.
  • Halloween mix: Add Halloween sprinkles to the chocolate coating and mixture, Halloween themed candy, edible eyes, and candy corn to make this extra festive and spooky.

ADD-INS

  • Chocolate chips: Milk chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, chocolate chunks, or mini chocolate chips.
  • Reese’s pieces: Adds Fall colors and a peanut butter flavor.
  • Sprinkles: Adds fun and color! Add this in to celebrate a birthday or celebration.
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Pretzels
  • Peanuts: Lightly roasted peanuts or honey roasted peanuts would be a great add in.
  • Caramel chips

leftovers & Storage

This snack mix will last for up to 1-2 weeks when stored in an airtight container or large ziplock bag at room temperature. The kitchen counter is a perfect place to keep this dessert.

I don’t recommend freezing this snack mix as the cereal will lose the crunchy texture since the powdered sugar mix will make the coated cereal soggy.
