Bold Chex Mix recipe

Chex Mix has always been a favorite savory snack mix, especially the Bold party blend flavor and this recipe tastes just like it! I love extra-bold Chex mix so I added even more flavor than the traditional Chex mix.

This oven-baked Chex Mix recipe couldn’t be easier to make. We bake this mix on low heat for an hour to get a perfect crisp in each bite. We use all of the original Chex Mix recipe ingredients such as Chex cereal, small pretzels, rye chips, and bold seasonings.

There’s a few different ways you could prepare this Chex mix instead of the oven method. You can use the slow cooker or microwave version recipe listed below with all the same ingredients. The slow cooker version takes a bit of time but is extremely easy to do.

Key ingredients

  • Chex cereal: The main ingredient to this Chex mix! This recipe calls for wheat Chex and corn Chex cereal but you could also add rice Chex cereal or use just one cereal. I love to use at least 2 different cereals for flavor. Crispix cereal could also be used!
  • Butter: The butter soaks into all of the dry ingredients so each bite has a bold and buttery flavor. I use salted butter but unsalted butter could also be used.
  • Pretzels: We use the mini pretzel twits for these but you can use pretzel sticks, extra mini pretzels or any shape.
  • Rye chips: These little salty bits of crunchy chips are my favorite! Most grocery stores carry them in the chip or snack isle .
  • Mixed nuts: I prefer lightly salted nuts for more flavor. You can use any of your favorite nuts such as peanuts, almonds, cashews, pecans, or hazelnuts. I love to use the cocktail style canned peanuts.
  • Worcestershire sauce: One of the key ingredients to making this Chex mix full of savory flavor. We use extra Worcestershire sauce to make this extra bold.
  • Seasonings: Seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

how to make bold chex mix

Prepare baking sheet: Preheat oven to 250 degrees F and and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. You’ll want to use the largest baking sheet you have so the mixture has plenty of room to bake.

Combine dry ingredients: Place the Chex cereal, pretzels, rye chips, and mixed nuts in a large mixing bowl. Mix together until combined.

Make coating: In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt together.

Coat, spread and bake: Pour the butter mixture over the dry ingredients, folding together with a rubber spatula or use your hands so the cereal doesn’t break it’s shape.

Bake: Spread the coated mixture onto the prepared baking sheet and bake for 1 hour, rotating and flipping the mixture every 15 minutes. Let cool completely and enjoy!

Add ins

Feel free to add-in or swap any of the dry ingredients for some of these ingredients below.

  • Cheerios: Add the regular Cheerios or Honey Nut flavor for a sweeter flavor.
  • Goldfish or Cheez its: Adds a cheesy flavor to the mix. These are my favorite add-ins!
  • Bugles: These are crunchy and similar to corn chips. They have a fun shape too.
  • Oyster crackers: These crackers remind me of the crackers that are in the original recipe.
  • Popcorn: Pop your own or use store bought. Use kettle corn for a sweet flavor.
  • Bagel chips: These have a similar texture to rye chips.
  • Sesame chips: You can find these at most grocery stores in the snack isle.
  • Baked chips: I prefer to use baked chips as opposed to regular potato chips so the mix doesn’t get too greasy. Any of your favorite flavors would work such as baked classic potato chips, Cheeto’s, barbecue, salt and vinegar, and sour cream and onion.
  • Mini crackers: Some favorites are mini Ritz crackers, Mini Club crackers, or Mini Saltine crackers.
  • Raisins: Adds a sweet flavor and chewy texture. Add any of your favorite dried fruit such as cranberries or cherries.

Microwave Method

If you want to skip the oven and cook this Chex Mix in the microwave instead you can! Simply melt together the butter mixture and then pour oven the dry ingredients. Place coated mix in the microwave and heat for 2 minutes on HIGH heat, then stir, and let sit for a few minutes. Repeat 1 more time and then spread the mix on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let sit until completely cooled.

Slow Cooker Method

Add all of the dry ingredients to a slow cooker or crock pot. In a small bowl, whisk together the butter and seasoning mixture. Pour over the mixture and stir until combined. Cook on LOW for 3 hours, stirring every 30 minutes. Pour the mix onto baking sheets to cool completely. This will help the mix get crunchy. I recommend making a double batch of this if you have a large enough slow cooker.

pro tips & Variations

  • Sweet and savory: If you want to add something sweet to this mix, add M&Ms, chocolate chips, or kettle corn to the mix.
  • Spicy: Add a few dashes of Tabasco sauce to the Chex coating mixture. You could also add more hot Cheetos, extra black pepper or your favorite hot sauce.
  • Make sure to rotate and flip! You’ll have to rotate the baking sheet and flip the mixture 4 times total to get a perfect crispy mix.
  • Use big baking sheets. You want to spread the mixture out as much as possible so they have plenty of room to bake to get crunchy.
  • Holiday season: Give away this homemade Chex mix recipe as gifts during the holiday season by placing the mix in jars and attached the recipe to it. Everyone will want it!
  • Worcestershire sauce variation: If you don’t have or aren’t able to find Worcestershire sauce at your grocery store, you can swap the sauce for soy sauce. Please note that soy sauce doesn’t have the same flavors as Worcestershire sauce but it does have the same umami and savory flavor.
  • Gluten-free version: If you want to make this mix gluten-free it’s easy. Simply use gluten-free cereals, pretzels, and crackers.

I have officially made this 5 times with all different add-ins. Depending on what I do add, I have to adjust the salt because it can get pretty intense. Thank you for an amazing recipe. It’s definitely a family favorite!!!

Love this version of Chex mix! I’ve made it twice now. The two other recipes I made before finding this one were underwhelming. The second time I made this I decreased the salt to 1/4 tsp, and it was the perfect amount of saltiness for us. Thank you!!
