key ingredients

  • Sugar cookie mix: I used Betty Crocker’s Dry Sugar Cookie Mix and added butter and an egg.
  • Frosting: I used a can of vanilla frosting but feel free to make your own homemade frosting from scratch, it’s easy to do.
  • Fresh berries: The fresh strawberries are to make the red stripes and the fresh blueberries are to make the stars. Be sure the berries are fresh otherwise the water can ruin the pizza. Always wash and pat the berries dry before using.

HOW TO MAKE AMERICAN FLAG FRUIT PIZZA

Prep pan: Line a 13×9 inch baking pan or jelly roll pan with parchment paper and preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Make sugar cookie crust: In a large mixing bowl, prepare sugar cookie dough according to package instructions. Evenly press cookie dough onto the bottom of the baking sheet and bake for about 15-20 minutes or until the middle is cooked and the edges are a light golden brown. Let cool.

Let cool and frost cookie: Once cooled, pull the cookie out by grabbing both ends of the parchment paper or decorate in the pan. Generously spread frosting over the surface of the cooled cookie crust.

Add stars and stripes: Add 5-6 rows of blueberries to make the stars. Then add 4 rows of strawberries to make the stripes. I like to add stripes to the top and bottom row first to get an even line for the other 2 stripes.

Enjoy! Place in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

recipe tips

  • Dry washed berries: Make sure to pat the berries dry completely otherwise the excess water will make the frosting watery.
  • Let the cookie pizza come to room temperature before serving if cookie is in the refrigerator so the cook is soft and chewy.
  • Use your favorite fresh fruit: Blackberries, watermelon, raspberries, and grapes will work.
  • White stripes: Add sliced bananas, white chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, or use a piping bag to add frosting or cool whip.
  • Make cookie stars: Use a small star cookie cutter to make mini star cookies with sugar cookie dough or pie crust. Add them to the top of the blueberries to make this extra festive.
  • Round shape: Instead of baking the cookie in a rectangular baking dish, add the dough to a round pizza pan. You can also spread the dough on a cookie sheet and form the cookie shape with your hands.

variations

  • Cookie base: Swap the sugar cookie base for chocolate chip cookie dough. Use pre-made dough or make your own. This homemade Sugar Cookie recipe and Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe would work great.
  • Frosting: Use any kind of white canned frosted such as whipped frosting, cream cheese frosting, or vanilla buttercream frosting. You can also make your own frosting from scratch or use homemade whipped cream.
  • Fruit: Fresh raspberries and blackberries could be used instead.
  • Candy Pizza: Swap the fruit for blue and red M&M chocolate candies. This will make this dessert extra sweet

leftovers & storage

Place leftovers in an airtight container or wrap dish with plastic wrap. It’s best to keep this dessert stored in the refrigerator since we use fresh berries on top. Store for up to 3 days. The berries may start to become soft after the first day.
