apple pie cinnamon rolls
Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls makes the best Fall treat and couldn’t be easier to make. We use pizza dough instead of making our own so these rolls are extra light, fluffy, and soft. Homemade cinnamon rolls are hard to beat and they get even better when they have a cozy Fall twist.
We stuff these fluffy Cinnamon Rolls with apple pie filling that we make from scratch and traditional cinnamon mixture for the filling made with butter, white sugar, and brown sugar. Once these rolls get rolled up, we let them rise, then bake them, and then drizzle the tops with a light icing.
These are the perfect cinnamon rolls if you’re craving a cozy and comforting breakfast treat or dessert. Apple season is here and these rolls are the best way to enjoy them!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
key ingredients
- Pizza dough: The key ingredient to making these rolls extra easy and fluffy! I used two dough balls from Trader Joe’s. If you want to make your own dough from scratch (made with instant yeast), try this Cinnamon Roll recipe.
- Small or large apples: Use your favorite fresh apples such as Granny Smiths, Honey Crisp, or Pink Lady apples. You can either leave the skin on or peel the apples before cutting or shredding them. I always prefer to use sweet apples as apposed to tart apples but you can use any.
- Cinnamon sugar mixture: Granulated sugar, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon.
- Butter: Make sure the butter is softened at room temperature so it spreads on the pizza dough easily.
how to make apple pie cinnamon rolls
Knead dough: Knead the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface and let sit for 30 minutes or until puffy. It’s ideal if the dough rises in a warm place. This will make the soft dough easy to spread and roll out.
Make apple pie filling: In the meantime, heat a frying pan with butter and melt. Add small pieces of apples, sugar and cinnamon and sauté until apples are tender and soft, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and drain any excess liquid. Set aside.
Roll out dough: Roll dough out to about 14×19 inch rectangle with a rolling pin. Spread softened butter over the dough. Mix together the brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl and then sprinkle the mixture over the buttered dough. Gently press the cinnamon sugar mixture down with your hands into the buttered dough. It’s ok to let the mixture go over the edges.
Add apple filling: Spread the apple pie filling on top all over the cinnamon sugar mixture.
Assemble rolls: Tightly roll up the dough, starting at the long side. Cut into 12-14 even rolls and place the rolls on a lightly greased baking dish, casserole dish or round cake pan (you could also line with parchment paper). Place the rolls in a cool area and let sit to rise for another 20 minutes. The rise time will be different depending on how warm or cool the area is. They will get a little puffy and rise a bit. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Bake rolls: Bake cinnamon rolls for 20-25 minutes or until the tops are a light golden brown and the centers should be bubbly. You want to under-bake them a little so they stay soft and gooey in the middle.
Frost rolls with icing: While the cinnamon rolls are cooling, add all of the icing ingredients together and mix with a fork or whisk until smooth. Spread the icing over cinnamon rolls and serve while warm. Enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- If you want to save time during the day, you can make these cinnamon rolls the day or night before. Just leave them covered in the refrigerator until ready to bake.
- Add-ins: Chocolate chips, cinnamon chips, raisins, and nuts such as pecan, walnuts, and almonds make great additions.
- Make sure to use a sharp knife to cut the rolls. This will prevent the cinnamon rolls from getting too squished when you cut them.
- Instead of topping the Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls with icing, you can use your favorite cream cheese frosting, dust the tops with powdered sugar, or leave them plain and top with ice cream.
- Add apple pie spice instead of ground cinnamon to spice the apples for more flavor.
- Frost the cinnamon rolls with icing when they are warm for best results.
- Make sure you give enough time to let the dough rise. This will help make the rolls extra fluffy and soft.
- If you have an extra cinnamon roll pieces from the ends that didn’t hold the shape well, place them in small ramekins to bake.
how to freeze cinnamon rolls
Tightly wrap the assembled cinnamon rolls, completing steps 1-5. Cover the cinnamon rolls in the baking pan with plastic wrap, aluminum aluminum foil or a lid.
Place the cinnamon rolls in the freezer up for up 2 months. When ready to bake, remove the cinnamon rolls from the refrigerator and let them come to room temperature overnight. They will need to complete the second rise. Place a warm damp towel over the rolls when they rise for the second time.
Bake according to the recipe instructions and make the icing.
leftovers & storage
These Cinnamon Rolls make great leftovers for the next morning! Simply cover the cinnamon rolls with plastic wrap or transfer them to an airtight container and store them at room temperature for 2-3 days.
If you want to store them longer, place them in the refrigerator for up to 6 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven on 350 degrees F for a few minutes.
