Why You’ll Love lazy lasagna Recipe
key ingredients
- Ravioli: The star ingredient that makes this dish extra easy. I love using cheese ravioli, spinach ravioli or meat ravioli. We don’t have to precook the ravioli ahead of time since the ravioli will cook when it bakes and you can even use frozen ravioli.
- Garlic: Fresh chopped garlic from garlic cloves is best instead of the jarred stuff.
- Onion: Either a yellow or white onion.
- Italian sausage: Sweet Italian sausage is our favorite to layer the lasagna. You could also use lean ground beef instead, just be sure to season it.
- Ricotta cheese: Whole-milk or park-skim cheese can be used. Ricotta will add creaminess, a touch of sweetness, and texture that’s in a regular lasagna.
- Marinara sauce or pasta sauce (not tomato sauce): Use your favorite store-bought sauce or a homemade sauce.
- Cheese: Parmesan and mozzarella. Always try to shred and grate your own cheese if you can to get make the cheese extra melty.
- Seasoning: Salt, pepper and Italian seasoning.
- Basil: For garnish. Fresh basil leaves work best and bring the most flavor (optional).
how to make lazy lasagna
Cook sausage: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. In a large skillet or frying pan, brown the sausage over medium-high heat, using a spatula to crumble the meat to cook. Once cooked, drain to remove grease.
Sauté onion and garlic: In the same frying pan, sauté onion in olive oil until translucent and soft, about 4 minutes. Add in garlic and sauté for another minute until fragrant.
Combine sausage and sauce: Add the cooked sausage, seasonings, and half of the jar of marinara sauce to the pan and stir to combine. Remove from heat.
Assemble lasagna layers: Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish or casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray and spread a thin layer of the marinara sauce on the bottom of the dish. Arrange a layer of half of the ravioli over the sauce, then top with all of the sausage meat sauce, then half of the ricotta cheese, then half of the shredded mozzarella, half of the parmesan, repeat with the remaining ravioli, remaining marinara sauce, remaining ricotta, remaining mozzarella cheese, remaining parmesan cheese.
Bake lazy lasagna: Loosely cover the dish with aluminum foil, be sure to avoid touching the cheese. Bake for 35 minutes, remove the foil and bake for 15 more minutes, then broil for 3-4 minutes to get the cheese a light brown and bubbly. Let the lazy lasagna sit for at least 10 minutes before serving.
Garnish and serve: Serve and sprinkle more parmesan cheese on top, garnish with fresh basil or parsley (optional). Serve while the cheese is melty and gooey. Enjoy!
pro tips
- Add spice: Add red pepper flakes to the ricotta and spinach mixture to add a kick. Use as much or as little depending on how much spice you want to add.
- Add-ins: This dish can easily be made with veggies. Just add it in when you sauté the onions and garlic. Spinach, kale, zucchini, bell peppers, peas, mushrooms, or fresh tomatoes make great additions.
- Shred your own cheese: I always recommend grating and shredding your own cheese to ensure the cheese is extra melty. The store bought stuff adds an anti-caking agent to the pre-shredded stuff so it won’t melt the same.
recipe variations
- Sauce variation: Instead of using a marinara sauce for the base, switch it up and use a white Alfredo sauce for an even creamier texture.
- Make ahead: Want to come home to dinner already made? Simply prepare the recipe but don’t bake it until the night you want to enjoy it. Cover the baking tray tightly with plastic wrap and store casserole dish in the refrigerator up to 3 days in advance.
- Meat variations: Ground beef, ground chicken, ground turkey, and ground pork all work well in this recipe.
- Ravioli variation: Instead of using ravioli, tortellini makes a great alternative or your favorite type of pasta however, you will have to use cooked pasta so you’ll need to do one extra step.
leftovers & storage
To-Store: Leftover lasagna is always delicious the next day. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days. When ready to reheat, you can microwave or heat in the oven.
Bake the leftovers in the oven at 400 degrees F for about 10 minutes or until heated through.
To-Freeze: This recipe freezes well and I love doubling the recipe to freeze a whole one- it’s always a good idea! No need to bake the lasagna if you wanted to freeze it. Wrap baking dish in plastic wrap then again in heavy duty foil and freeze up to 3 months.
To bake frozen lasagna, let the lasagna sit in the refrigerator overnight or let thaw on the counter for a few hours. You could also bake it frozen but it will take longer to cook.
If baking frozen lasagna, bake at 375 degrees F until warmed about 1 hour, or bake thawed according to recipe instructions. Make sure the center is warmed throughout, the bake time may vary.
